Thomas Stewart

Preamble

  • Throughout the fall semester of my sophomore year, I discovered a harmony amongst the content and ideas presented throughout my courses. As I faced the prompt of the final project for my Intermediate Poetry Seminar, I initially saw it as an opportunity to concentrate the recurring themes I encountered throughout my classes. With this in mind, I eventually conceptualized a collection of three poems that explored the nuances of the sexual rights movement, with a particular emphasis on the tension that arises from attempting to constrict non-western identities in the highly westernized human rights regime. Much of the inspiration and research for the project derived from researching sexual minorities who were also minorities in some other respect (social class, race, etc.). Throughout all three of these works, I utilize the poetic form to illustrate the multiple dimensions that comprise the state of the sexual rights movement.
